St. John's is the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador and the most easterly city in North America. It occupies a sheltered harbour on the Avalon Peninsula, where steep hills descend toward the Atlantic Ocean and the Narrows. The city combines a working waterfront with a historic downtown, residential neighbourhoods, and access to coastal landscapes. Fishing and maritime trade helped shape its development, while the modern city serves as the province's main commercial, educational, cultural, and governmental centre. Colourful buildings, exposed coastal terrain, and a busy harbour give St. John's a distinctive setting within Atlantic Canada.

St. John's has deep connections to the Indigenous peoples of the region, including the Beothuk and Mi'kmaq, followed by centuries of European fishing, settlement, and trade. Water Street developed alongside the fishery and is recognized by the city as the oldest commercial street in North America. The city's heritage also reflects strong Irish and British influences, particularly in architecture, music, language, and community traditions. Quidi Vidi preserves the character of an old fishing village, while the city's museums and historic sites interpret its maritime, military, Indigenous, and cultural history.

Signal Hill National Historic Site rises above the entrance to St. John's Harbour and contains walking trails, historic fortifications, and Cabot Tower. The site was important for harbour defence and communications, and it was where Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless transmission. Quidi Vidi Lake is associated with the Royal St. John's Regatta and sits beside walking paths and parkland. The nearby East Coast Trail provides access to rugged cliffs, coves, headlands, and coastal habitats. Pippy Park adds forest and open green space within the urban area, while the surrounding Atlantic waters support seabirds, whales, and other marine life.

Seafood remains central to St. John's food culture, with cod, crab, mussels, lobster, and other Atlantic species appearing on local menus. Traditional Newfoundland dishes include fish and brewis, toutons, salt fish, and pea soup, while local restaurants also use berries, root vegetables, and other regional ingredients. The city is known for its strong connection to traditional music, kitchen parties, and Newfoundland storytelling. Another distinctive feature is the relationship between the harbour and the surrounding hills: ships entering from the Atlantic pass through the narrow channel beneath Signal Hill before reaching the waterfront at the centre of the city.
