Sokcho-si is a coastal city in northeastern South Korea where the East Sea meets rugged mountains, giving it a maritime and outdoor character. Originally a small fishing hub, the city has grown into a gateway to natural landscapes while maintaining its working port and fishery traditions. Beaches, lagoons, and seafood markets reflect centuries of coastal life, and local history preserves the stories of communities shaped by both sea and mountain.

The surrounding geography is striking. Just west lies Seoraksan National Park, with jagged granite peaks, waterfalls, caves, and the historic Sinheungsa Temple attracting hikers and nature lovers year-round. Within the city, Cheongchoho and Yeongnangho lakes offer tranquil walks, while the sandy beach along the East Sea frames sunrises and sea breezes. Pavilions, piers, and lookout points make the coastline accessible, blending natural beauty with daily life.

Sokcho’s atmosphere balances activity and reflection. Early mornings at the fish market bring fresh seafood and local rhythm, while Abai Village preserves the stories and cuisine of North Korean settlers. Seasonal festivals, cozy cafés, and night markets offer experiences of local flavors like raw fish, red crab, and buckwheat noodles.
